Overview

The Portrait of a Lady, considered to be Henry James’ finest work, was first published as a serial from 1880 to 1881 in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillians. This first single volume edition was printed in 1882. Brown cloth boards, minor flaking to top and bottom of spine, slight rubbing/bumping to corners of cover, previous owner bookplate on inside cover, and a detached endpaper. What makes this a truly exceptional find is the dated inscription and signature by Henry James! The inscription is a quote from the work itself: “You can’t always please yourself; you must sometimes please other people.” Then dated May 11th 1904 and signed. Missing the period after copyright date so not a first edition/first printing. Between second and fifth printing of the first edition. No significant differences in points are discernible. Sixth printing points include in the records a charge for altering the title page, so certainly prior to the sixth printing.
