Lisa Maxwell's "The Last Magician" is the exciting adventure story of Esta, a young woman with the ability to manipulate and travel through time. She is charged by her guardian to travel back to the year 1902 to retrieve an ancient book believed to hold the key to freeing the magic users of New York from the boundary that traps them within their city. However, in order to do so, she must join the gang who liberated the book from its original owners, the anti-magic group that originally erected the boundary that surrounds New York. Esta must help the gang succeed while also planning to steal the book for herself, all while dealing with her growing relationship with Harte Darrigan, the titular Last Magician. Maxwell's novel is a rousing romp through the world of 20th century New York while also incorporating the fascinating elements of an underground magical society. The cast of characters are diverse and engaging, and the plot never stops for a moment. Even I couldn't guess at all the twists and turns. I would definitely recommend to any fan of science fiction, teen novels, or the turn of the 20th century.
In an alternate version of present-day Manhattan, magic is dying and Esta, a Mageus, travels back to 1901, navigating gangs, secret societies, and her feelings for another magician to stop the destruction of a book that can possibly restore magic.
