The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, is one of my top favorite books. I read it straight through in 4 hours glued to my uncomfortable kitchen chair. Make sure you pick a chair with cushions when you start your copy! The Glass Castle is a memoir of the author's incredibly interesting, adventurous, and shocking childhood. Her parents were nomadic and were far from responsible but they loved their kids and showed them the world through extremely non-conventional experiences. The family moves all over the country - Nevada, Arizona, West Virginia - following potential job and money opportunities that always seem to fall through. The kids are the strong ones of the crew and keep the family surviving through all kinds of crazy experiences. It is just an amazing story.
The child of an alcoholic father and an eccentric artist mother discusses her family's nomadic upbringing, during which she and her siblings fended for themselves while their parents outmaneuvered bill collectors and the authorities.
