The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin has already won two Hugo awards, one for this first volume, the second for the sequel. (I am currently reading the third book.) The Fifth Season is narrated from three different points-of-view, one of which is told in the second person. (This may seem like a strange choice at first, but by the cliffhanger close of the book it makes perfect sense.) A persecuted group of humans with magical geological powers must keep the world from violent cataclysms called "seasons". This is the story of three women of different ages, who have been "cursed" with this reviled but needed ability. The complex characters are well-rounded and diverse: they are flawed and dangerous as well as compassionate and heroic. I don't remember finishing a first book in a series as fast as this. Superb, evocative writing, deserving of all the accolades it has gotten.
At the end of the world, a woman must hide her secret power and find her kidnapped daughter in this "intricate and extraordinary" Hugo Award winning novel of power, oppression, and revolution. (The New York Times)This is the way the world ends...for the last time.It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.
