Selma

by Ava DuVernay
Ana DuVernay's "Selma" is a powerful depiction of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Ana DuVernay's "Selma" is a moving addition to the canon of black historical bio-pics. "Selma" is an unflinching look inside the historic 1965 march campaigning for voting rights. The film establishes the march as one of the major victories of the Civil Rights Movement and unveils on-screen a radical side of Dr. King. DuVarney gives a sharp analysis of King at the time of the march and the mechanisms behind the protest. The most striking aspect of the film is DuVarney's decision not to give King the watered down treatment heaped on by politicians and textbooks. DuVarney's approach is to portray a man who is human, with many layers, doubts, and fears. The film is a must-see. DuVarney cleverly, through the characters in the film, points out other battles during the movement: Albany, Freedom Summer, Birmingham, and the tensions within SNCC. In the context of the recent gutting of provisions within the Voting Rights Act and discussions about King's legacy, this is a film as timely as it is historical.
