'Sabriel' was one of those accidental finds for me that absolutely paid off. It is the story of a young girl living in the nonmagical realm of Ancelstierre, just outside of the wall separating them from the magic of the Old Kingdom. Her father is the Abhorsen, a necromancer tasked with keeping the Dead from rising out of death. But when he goes missing, Sabriel must face her destiny as the next Abhorsen, traveling into the magical kingdom and even into death to find her father and defeat the evil forces trapping him there. The world of the story is fully realized and complex, but the story is really driven forward by the strong characters. I become very attached to Sabriel, the unforgettable hero of the story. Young Adult fiction is all about strong female leads right now, but so many of them are flat, one-dimensional. Sabriel is strong and courageous, even daring sometimes. But she is also kind, loyal, vulnerable. If you liked Katniss and Hermione, you'll love Sabriel. This book is engrossing for both teens and adults, lovers of magical realism and high fantasy, even dinosaurs will love this book. Do you have a pulse? Then go read this book before it's too late!
Sabriel, daughter of the necromancer Abhorsen, must journey into the mysterious and magical Old Kingdom to rescue her father from the Land of the Dead.
