This book was not my first choice. I know that seems a terrible way to start off a review, especially a five-star review at that, but it is true. I had seen "Running with Scissors" on the shelf of my local bookstore a few times, and it always sounded interesting, but I could never pull the trigger on the darn thing. Then I discovered a book called "Dry" by the same author. "Dry" peaked my interest immediately. I was actually excited to read a new book. I cracked it open as soon as I got home and devoured it... for the first three pages. Printed there on page 3 were the words "but my crazy childhood is a whole other story." With an audible grumble, I knew what I would have to do. To better understand the book, I'd have to learn about Burroughs' past. You win "Running with Scissors". I picked up a copy, and the rest is history. Burroughs has such a remarkable way of telling his own life stories. Even when something seems so crazy and fantastical, it holds such a sense of truth. This author was gifted with the life of a fictional character and has blessed us with his experiences. This coming of age book has everything you look for in a book. Family drama, life lessons, and a whole lot of laughs. "Running with Scissors" is an A+ in my book. I have since read Burroughs' entire catalog of books, and have enjoyed them all immensely, with the small exception of one book. If you have ever found yourself considering this book, even a little, read it. This is the best place to start.
