Remembrance Days/A Different Kind of Weather

Remembrance Days/A Different Kind Of Weather

This excellent Dream Academy "two-fer" from the always dependable -- yet artistically challenged -- Collectibles label includes both 1987's Remembrance Days and 1990's A Different Kind of Weather. While Days, the British trio's follow-up to its acclaimed self-titled debut, failed to generate any hits, its typically lush production and bigger-than-life anthems ("Indian Summer" could very well be "Life in a Northern Town"'s older sibling) make for a thorough and enjoyable listen. In fact, it's a more solid record altogether. A Different Kind of Weather, however, is a more difficult collection to embrace. The group's attempts at integrating into the burgeoning Britpop/Madchester scene (the trip-hop-heavy cover of John Lennon's "Love") clashed with the rest of the record, obscuring some its prettier moments ("Not for Second Prize," "Lowlands"). That said, this is a fine package of songs by a group that should have received more attention than it did. Buy the first record as well and make it a "three-fer." ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
