Der Plan, der urspriinglich diesem Buch zugrunde lag, war der eines Hand buches. . Die groBe Bedeutung, die die Tuberkuloseforschung von jeher hatte und der gewaltige Aufschwung, der ihr seit etwa 25 Jahren vergonnt war, konnten einen solchen Gedanken rechtfertigen. Auch die pathologische Ana tomie hat gerade in dieser Zeit mannigfache neue Probleme aufgegriffen und bearbeitet. Aber eine groBe Anzahl von Tuberkuloseforschern muBten ihr notgedrungen verhaltnismaBig fern bleiben. Jenen ein Werk in die Hande zu geben, an dem sie sich iiber eine der wichtigsten Grundlagen der Tuberkulose forschung unterrichten konnten, erschien deshalb als eine reizvolle Aufgabe. Es stellte sich jedoch nach langen miihevollen Vorarbeiten heraus, daB der urspriingIiche Plan nicht gut durchfiihrbar war. Erstens namlich diirfte schon heute eine liickenlose Bearbeitung der pathologischen Anatomie der Tuber kulose, die die vorhandene Literatur moglichst restlos erfassen wollte, die Kraft eines Einzelnen fast iibersteigen oder doch wenigstens so viel Zeit erfordern, daB groBe Teile beim Erscheinen des Werkes schon wieder veraltet waren. Ein zweiter Grund aber veranlaBte mich in viel starkerem MaBe zur Anderung des Planes. Jeder Pathologe wird zwar mit mir die Uberzeugung haben, er gebiete gerade auf dem Gebiet der Tuberkulose iiber einen so groBen Schatz von Erfah rungen, daB er beim Unterricht, bei Demonstrationen usw. nie in Verlegenheit kommen konnte, daB er auch - abgesehen von den erwahnten Schwierigkeiten wohl imstande ware, das ganze Gebiet oder einen Tell davon handbuchmaBig zu bearbeiten.
