Il constitue le dernier de ses crits, la partie finale ayant vraisemblablement t con ue quelques semaines avant sa mort, et l uvre tant inachev e.Sa r'daction s est tablie tout au long des deux derni res ann es de sa vie, jusqu son refuge au ch teau d'Ermenonville : la nature solitaire et parano aque de l auteur malgr une notori t croissante, l a contraint cet exil apr's l accueil de ses Dialogues, et peut- tre galement la mort de Louis Fran ois de Bourbon (dit le Prince de Conti) durant l t 1776.Les R veries du promeneur solitaire tiennent la fois de l autobiographie et de la r flexion philosophique : elles constituent un ensemble d une centaine de pages, l auteur employant tr's g n ralement la premi re personne du singulier et apportant par digressions quelques d tails sur sa vie.Le livre, qui se pr'sente comme "un informe journal de [des] r veries" de Rousseau, est compos de dix sections in gales, appel es promenades, qui sont des r flexions sur la nature de l Homme et son Esprit. Rousseau, travers cet ouvrage, pr'sente une vision philosophique du bonheur, proche de la contemplation, de l tat ataraxique, travers un isolement relatif, une vie paisible, et surtout, une relation fusionnelle avec la nature, d velopp e par la marche, la contemplation, l herboristerie que Rousseau pratique.Ces R veries cherchent produire chez le lecteur un sentiment d'empathie qui lui permettrait travers l auteur de mieux se saisir lui-m me.Avec les Confessions, Jean-Jacques voulait d abord faire la lumi re sur le citoyen Rousseau et sur sa vie ; cette uvre post rieure est davantage une invitation au voyage et une r flexion g n rale sur son mode de pens e.
