Lebenswelt Ghetto

Lebenswelt Ghetto: Alltag Und Soziales Umfeld Wahrend Der Nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung

English summary: In historical research the "Jewish neighborhoods" set up in the German Occupied Territories between 1939 and 1942 have so far mainly been studied in terms of being precursors to the annihilation conducted by the Nazis, usually with a focus on the perspective of the perpetrators. As specific habitats, however, ghettos have so far hardly been examined. The conference "Lebenswelt Ghetto" (life in the ghetto) held from October 9 to October 11, 2009 in Lueneburg provided the impulse to at least partly close this gap. The subsequent conference proceedings present the Nazi ghettos as realms of life and action, which - even in the face of the ever-present context of prosecution - were in part also shaped by their residents. Contributors from Israel, the USA, Canada, Poland, Lithuania and Germany have focused on the Lebenswelt Ghetto, analyzing factors such as the room for maneuver and decision-making patterns, the interaction and communication amongst the people in the ghetto. In addition, the proceedings discuss new methodological approaches to research on the prosecution and the documentation of the Lebenswelt Ghetto.
