Get Low

by Aaron Schneider
Amazing character-driven drama with powerful acting

Released in 2010, "Get Low" was so far off my radar that I had never heard of it until I saw the DVD and picked it up because of the outstanding cast, led by Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, and Sissy Spacek, each of whom is typically reason enough to watch a film. In, "Get Low" they certainly don't disappoint. Duvall carries the film as a hermit in the 1920s who has lived in a secluded cabin for 40 years for reasons we can only guess at. During that time he has become the local Boogeyman to generations of kids who have dared each other to venture out to see his cabin and break a window, or worse yet step inside. He's been alone for so long, no one in the area knows exactly who he is or why he's there, but there are stories and rumors. Nearing the end of his life, he decides to throw himself a living funeral to find out how people feel about him and to tell his story once and for all. That scene, which provides the climax of the film, features a monolog from Duvall that is literally jaw-dropping, proving that he is one of America's greatest living actors.

A movie spun out of equal parts folk tale, fable and real-life legend about the mysterious, 1930s Tennessee hermit who famously threw his own rollicking funeral party... while he was still alive.
