Defensive Pistol Fundamentals

by Cunningham, Grant
Educational, informative, and useful!

We stock titles like this all the time, but I don't know if I've ever heard a review about any of them! Grant Cunningham's "Defensive Pistol Fundamentals" is very informative, and appears targeted (no pun intended) towards the novice pistol user. He covers equipment selection, practice techniques, and mindset, for anyone thinking of carrying a firearm for protection. He mostly covers sidearms carried on the body for concealed-carry, so there isn't a lot about home defense scenarios. Also, this book is aimed (again, no pun) towards semi-auto users. Revolver owners will have to seek out one of his revolver-oriented books. Cunningham's language is very easy to follow and doesn't get bogged down in technical jargon. The ideas of training for real-world scenarios instead of sports and games is an excellent point that he addresses throughout. He also makes it a point to mention that to get the real benefit, you should only use his book for a basic introduction and seek formal training from qualified instructors at various academies and self-defense schools across the nation. Overall, the book does serve as an excellent intro into the world of handguns for self-defense purposes. Minor critiques: Cunningham mentions the importance of hearing protection when operating firearms, but not eye protection. Eyes are just as important, and he does show a picture of a young spectator wearing both eye and ear protection, but he doesn't mention the eyes in his text. Also, the author states that in order to ensure reliability, a pistol must fire 500 rounds of ammo without jamming. However, at this point in the book, he hasn't talked about the proper way to shoot a pistol. "Limp-wristing" a semi-auto can also cause it to jam, and it might make a novice mistakenly blame his firearm-ammo combination. It would help if he addressed proper shooting techniques before talking about ammo and pistol choices.
