Overview

The modern classic, the basis of a Broadway musical, and major motion picture from Lion's Gate Films starring Christian Bale, Chloe Sevigny, Jared Leto, and Reese Witherspoon, and directed by Mary Harron.

In American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis imaginatively explores the incomprehensible depths of madness and captures the insanity of violence in our time or any other. Patrick Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, Bateman earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Expressing his true self through torture and murder, Bateman prefigures an apocalyptic horror that no society could bear to confront.

  • Creepily Entertaining

Have you ever wanted a peek inside the mind of a Mad Man? If so, then American Psycho is for you. The opulence, violence, and high fashion of the yuppie movement is brought forward in this sinister novel by Ellis. Murder, Rape, and impossibly exhaustive workout routines are all explored with vigor. A great summer read for the pool, now if you'll excuse me, I have to return some videotapes.

  • American Psycho

    Mitchell D. - 5 years 2 months ago

I think this book is commonly misunderstood as a promoter or advocate of murder/sex abuse, missing the point that it is a satirical masterpiece. It touches on becoming desensitized to violence, materialism, yuppie culture, homophobia, mental illness, and other significant topics. It perfectly weaves through a complex plot by an unreliable narrator that will make you constantly wondering what is real and what isn't. Bret Easton Ellis' other books are just as gripping, especially Glamorama. I'd recommend his work to everyone. #SpringPicks

  • Textbook post-modernism

    Kyle D. - 5 years 8 months ago

This book is often accused of praising that which it condemns. It's satire at its most biting and shocking. The comparison of the selfish and superficial Wall Street mentality to that of a serial killer's is just as relevant today as it was in the book's exaggerated version of late 1980's. It's grim and nihilistic look, coupled with its questionable narrator and unconventional format (some chapters start and end in the middle of sentences, some chapters are album reviews) make it a text book example of post modern writing. In short, it's tasteless, disgusting, and offensive. In all the right ways.

  • If you want inside the mind of a serial killer...

If I could give this book zero stars, I would. I decided to start reading this book, and I am not one to ever stop reading a book, no matter how much I dislike it. It took me two years to get through this because I could not keep reading it without losing my own sanity. Patrick Bateman is truly a psychopath that made me question how any one could be as messed up as he was. #SummerReading

  • A graphic book for those with a strong stomach

    Madison G. - 6 years ago

This book was a bit much for even an avid true crime lover like myself. There is so much cruelty and brutality just for shock-value. The story is pretty boring and confusing in the first 1/3 of the book. As the book goes on it gets clearer and far more interesting. When I got to the last 1/3 of the book I couldn’t put it down because I just needed to know what would happen. It really shows the decline into madness of a sadistic serial rapist and murderer. I would recommend this book to those with a strong stomach who won’t get too sad or angry reading about senseless violence against vulnerable populations and animals. #SummerReading
